University Guidance

University Guidance

Entrance to universities worldwide

The University Guidance Counsellor assists students with the university application process and is available to meet with parents and students to explain the process. We can advise on application deadlines, admission requirements and admissions testing. Our staff provide letters of recommendation, references, grade predictions and academic transcripts to support the application process.

The University Counsellor works in conjunction with the Academic Team thereby ensuring that students’ and parents’ aspirations for University destinations are understood, are appropriate and regular guidance is provided

Many of our students at St. George’s International School go on to excellent universities. Our University Guidance Counsellor has formed personal contacts with many of the world’s leading universities allowing for direct communications and rapid information exchange which greatly assists the research of opportunities.

We provide information on a wide range of universities and are regularly visited by University representatives who give presentations to our students. Students have numerous opportunities to meet with admissions representatives and learn more about programmes of study, admission requirements and facilities available at Universities around the world.

St. George’s International School hosts an Annual University Fair on our own campus which hosts over 60 universities each year from across the globe giving our students and their parents the perfect platform to explore opportunities for future study.

Remaining in Switzerland for University Study

Switzerland remains one of the top university choices for our students with 30% of St. George’s students applying to university in Switzerland to continue their studies in 2019.

The Academic Team work closely with the University Counsellor to advise students on subject choices and admission requirements for entry into Universities in Switzerland and beyond.

The University Counsellor arranges for students who are planning to stay in Switzerland for tertiary education to attend information days at Swiss Universities including École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Université de Lausanne (UNIL) and École Hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL).

In addition, the St. George’s Modern Foreign Languages Department assists the students with preparation for language proficiency examinations to meet admission requirements, where necessary.

The impact of COVID-19 on the University Application process

Switzerland underwent severe restrictions due to the impact of COVID-19 in 2020. St. George’s International School campus was closed to students from our 2021 cohort from 13th March to 8th June. A number of our boarding students were unable to return to campus at the end of the academic year following the campus closure on 13th March, due to quarantine regulations imposed on people entering the country.

Student Grading and Assessment
The normal academic grading scales were not changed as a result of online learning. Regular progress tests and end of year assessments were administered as usual, albeit virtually.

Our Graduation Requirements
Our graduation requirements have not changed. We are currently fully open and using a ‘bubble’ system in adherence with local cantonal regulations in order to keep different year groups from mixing. We follow the Swiss government’s regulations concerning social distancing, using masks, sanitising stations etc.

Distance Learning
Students were taught remotely online between 13th March and 8th June. For some students in different time zones, this meant them joining lessons at unsociable times. We were able to deliver a full timetable using our normal schedule in online classes. Students therefore did not miss lessons due to the pandemic.

Schedules and Course Offerings
We are able to offer all courses and subjects as before. As an IB school, we have adapted the lesson content to meet the recently published changes to the assessment components of the IB courses for the May 2021 examination session.

Admissions Tests for University
The majority of our students were unable to sit the SAT exam due to centre closures. In addition, there were limited opportunities to sit the IELTS English language test. Overall, disruption to the academic schedule was fairly minimal. Despite this, it is important to note that the school was closed and there was undoubtedly an impact on the students’ need to become better organised and establish good routines and study habits.
